Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/greenseal.org\/staging\/programs\/sustainable-packaging\/\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transitioning to Sustainable Packaging<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers and consumer goods companies worldwide are prioritizing efforts to minimize single-use packaging, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/paper-forest-products-and-packaging\/our-insights\/the-drive-toward-sustainability-in-packaging-beyond-the-quick-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more sustainable packaging<\/a> materials, and reduce use of virgin materials after decades of growth. In fact, companies, governments, and other organizations representing more than 20 percent of the plastic packaging market <a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/global-commitment\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">committed to ambitious goals for 2025<\/a> to realize a common vision of a circular economy for plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By designing a flexible framework based on industry best practices for recyclability and recycled content, Green Seal can help companies meet their goals and commitments and accelerate the transition to sustainable packaging for consumable products in both the household and commercial markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Packaging waste and environmental degradation are urgent and growing challenges. Even though recycling practices are now mainstream, a relatively small amount of packaging is recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the most recent year for which data is available, packaging and containers comprised more than\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/containers-and-packaging-product-specific#:~:text=EPA%20defines%20containers%20and%20packaging,28.1%20percent%20of%20total%20generation).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">28 percent<\/a>\u202fof the solid waste generated in the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the EPA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-01\/documents\/2018_tables_and_figures_dec_2020_fnl_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in 2018<\/a> the recycling rates by packaging type were:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>paper\/paperboard packaging and containers (80.9%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>metal containers\/packaging (55.7%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>glass containers (25%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plastic containers\/packaging (13.6%).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, mixed materials, labels, adhesives, and other attributes may result in packaging that is not recyclable and contaminates the recycling stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable packaging addresses these challenges by using content that would otherwise be wasted, avoiding producing more waste, and requiring packaging to be designed with recyclability in mind.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Green Seal\u2019s Sustainable Packaging Program<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Seal\u2019s reputation for credibility and market impact rests on an open and transparent process for developing our science-based criteria, following international best practices. Green Seal is actively working with stakeholders and our Consulting Partner, Capgemini, to develop draft criteria for public comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green Seal is currently developing criteria for its Sustainable Packaging Program based on five core principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Packaging recyclability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased recycled content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable sourcing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restrictions on hazardous chemicals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Functional performance requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With a recognition program for sustainability leadership, Green Seal can play a critical role in driving demand for packaging designed with the core principles in mind, helping to reduce packaging waste and improve the circularity of packaging throughout the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/greenseal.org\/staging\/programs\/sustainable-packaging\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Green Seal is recruiting qualified applicants to join a Sustainable Packaging Stakeholder Advisory Group.
