Verified raw materials make it easier for manufacturers and private labelers to find safer, environmental-friendly, and high-quality ingredients

Washington, DC / Pittsburgh, Pa. – LANXESS’ Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate has earned Green Seal verification for use in products certified to three Green Seal Standards: Sanitary Paper Products (GS1); Paper Products Used for Food Preparation (GS-18), and Food Service Packaging (GS-35).

Green Seal verification confirms that a raw material will meet the chemical-specific requirements of Green Seal’s stringent standards. Verified raw materials make it easier for manufacturers to identify safer, more environmentally sustainable, high-quality ingredients. “Transforming the market starts with clearly identifying sustainable options in the supply chain. Green Seal verification highlights suppliers whose materials meet the strict health and environmental requirements in our standards, ultimately encouraging production of more sustainable, third-party certified products in the marketplace,” said Doug Gatlin, CEO of Green Seal. “We are proud to award verification to LANXESS’ Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate.”

Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate is the first raw material verified by Green Seal for removal of wet strength resins in paper repulping. Historically, repulping aids have been chlorine-based. However, chlorine-based products can negatively impact repulping operations, degrade fiber quality, and pose environmental concerns from toxic organochlorine (AOX) generation. Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate is chlorine-free, meaning chlorine can be eliminated from the repulping process. Consequently, chlorinated by-products in the process wastewater can be significantly reduced or eliminated.

In addition to the environmental benefits, Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate offers efficient repulping and high-quality fiber characteristics. These characteristics have been quantified in an independent study recently peer-reviewed and published in the paper industry journal TAPPI.

Oxone Potassium Monopersulfate has been used for over 30 years in paper products such as tissue and towel paper, coffee filters and food packaging – products that often come into close contact with humans, highlighting the need for a raw material that is safer for human health.

Michael Hermann, business director actives at LANXESS, explains, “We at LANXESS value safety, health and innovative solutions. We are proud to receive the Green Seal raw material verification for our product Oxone as Green Seal is globally recognized and trusted for its health and environmental standards. With the raw material verification program, paper producers and other stakeholders along the value chain have an easy way to identify an ingredient that meets strict standards for safety and the environment – the same attributes Oxone brings to the paper industry.”
